In addition to the expansion, a new era of management is underway with the founder of Jamberoo Action Park, Jim Eddy handing over the reins of the business to son, Dax. Having grown up on the theme park and witnessed its development from dairy farm to leading waterpark, Dax has water rides running through his veins.
He explains, "the future continues to look bright for Jamberoo Action Park. However, we expect that we will have to continue to need to overcome the challenges presented by being a private, family-owned and operated business in an industry which is increasingly monopolised by corporatisation.
It is not a business where you can easily learn from your rivals as we are quite unique. But we take learnings from overseas and have invested heavily into strategic planning to build what is a state of the art theme park and successful business.
After several years, changes in regulations saw the end of this activity. It was this era that cemented Jamberoo Action Park as being the prominent fun park in the Illawarra area. This will contain the largest Interactive Water Play Area built in Australia as well as the Funnel Web, the longest and biggest water ride in the world.
For more information go to www. Image: Jim Eddy at front with family members and friends at the opening of Jamberoo's first waterslide in They contacted Rolka , the manufacturer of the Italian grass skis which were being used at the time and decided to purchase 10 pairs to trial on the grassy slopes at Jamberoo. The skis were a great success amongst all who tried them and it was decided to continue to pursue this recreational pastime and its potential as a commercial venture.
Another 20 sets of skis were ordered, a tow rope built from steel cable and powered by a Holden car motor was set up to swiftly take skiers to the top of the mountain and a disused farm shed was used as a kiosk from which guests could hire out the equipment. Early in , the Eddy family decided to develop operations further with an amenities building, restaurant, car park and importantly — the Chairlift.
This marked the commencement of Jamberoo Recreation Park — evolving later to Jamberoo Action Park, is it is known today. This venture was abandoned after high winds and repeated heavy snowfalls rendered it inoperable. The Eddy family bought the chairlift which was located inside a national park, where off-road access by vehicles was not permitted. So it was disassembled into pieces and transported to Jamberoo by helicopter! Once in Jamberoo the Chairlift was upgraded and erected by experienced contractors from the snow.
The drive unit required a new motor, the sheave assemblies were redesigned, the cable was replaced and new chairs were built around the frames of the originals. The remainder of the Chairlift, including the towers and bull wheels, were in good order and erected without modification. The first stage of Jamberoo Recreation Park was completed in time for the staging of the Australian Grass Ski Titles with final safety checks just one day prior to the event. To ensure that the chairs were safe, two litre, drums of water at least KG of weight were attached to each chair on the uphill side of the lift.
The brakes were then disabled and the Chairlift allowed to build up speed. Staff then stopped it successfully by winding on the handbrake. The Chairlift is still in operation and the only way to get to the famous Bobsled ride. There are not many things to do like this just a short drive from Sydney. The Splashout Waterslides were built in by Waterslides Australia and were the first water ride feature to go in at Jamberoo Recreation Park. There are two tracks — and 90 metres long and are as popular today as the first season they were built.
The Bobsled ride has long been voted as one of the most popular thrill rides at Jamberoo Action Park and features two tracks — offering something for everyone.
The Blue track was imported from Germany in and built by Weigand Leisure. It is the faster of the two tracks and darts a thrilling m down the mountain. The Green track was built in and was a welcome addition because it reduced the queuing times and provided an opportunity for younger children and families to enjoy the ride and take in the wonderful views traversing the 1km down the mountain.
The Speed Boats and Racing Cars were both introduced in and renovated a couple of years later in They were seen as very valuable additions to the park, providing a new and unique theme park-style experience — with guests controlling the action! In , 16 new cars were added to the Racing Cars attraction and the track was extended by metres.
It is also a great photo opportunity and offers a 3m jump and slide plunge features for everyone to enjoy. The park did not have any further development during the period to because of the impact that public liability insurance was having on the profitability of the business.
Looking forwards, park management conceived a master plan in the year , which was designed to shape the expansion of the park into the future and included 5 new and major attractions — all to be introduced in the years ahead. The Speed Boats were replaced by Outback Bay in This was an exciting wave pool which offered a level of excitement for everyone and which was a first for the region.
It proved to be a very popular new ride for the park — and pitted up to 8 riders against each other in a race to the finish line at the bottom. Surf Hill is meters long and each lane delivers 15 litres of water per second down the flume, pushing riders down a fast, wavey track slide.
