Just 15 Fossil Fragments to level 5 points. This is an excellent opportunity to level up other professions by 5 skill points. Especially if there is an expensive hump to get over.
Your profession level must be at 75 to pick up the given quest. The above items are mostly available near the DM Portal. Enchanting - just click on the junk, don't try to DE it normally.
Blacksmithing - there's an anvil behind the Heirloom Prize Vendors. Be sure to visit your trainer to have room for those 5 skill points. Pretty tough to mail the fossil frags though. Comment by Ghazpharro Don't know if it is a hotfix or a bug, but as of Oct 20, Archeology skill ups are being awarded for every dig. No mention was made in patch notes about this kind of change. Comment by Tertiam In the crates of archaeology fragments that you can buy from Brann Bronzebeard , you actually can get keystones.
Comment by DrakkonDarkspell Interesting information, but I have a question: Why wait so long before starting the solves? Is there some advantage to waiting you didn't discuss? I don't understand why you say to wait so long. Thanx if you can explain the logic. These may seem like petty changes, but when all combined they are adding significant unnecessary time to this profession. BTW, this seems to have occurred circa 5.
Although I can only conjecture, perhaps this has been done to ease time pressure on crowded cross realm servers by keeping people out of congested areas. We are paying for playing time, not waiting time.
With that being said, dig what you have to progress onward. Once you head to one of the digsites, you'll use your Survey ability to find barried artifact fragments. The light indicates how close you are with red being far, yellow closer, and green close.
After a few green lights in the right direction and you'll discover an artifact fragment. Archy - Archaeology Assistant is a very useful addon that will display the digsite locations. This can help you guess where a frag is buried and ultimately save time. The most useful part of Archy however has to be the light indicator.
If your survey says red, line up your character with the scope and travel in that direction until Archy shows a red light. Survey again and repeat for each color. Yellow, travel until it shows up yellow. Green, travel until it shows up green. Archy also allows for easy solving of artifacts, simply click the solve button next to the artifact. To add keystones, just left the keystone slot. Ok, now that you understand Archy a bit better, back to the guide. Once you get the hang of it, you'll be finding fragments in survey uses.
Each digsite can be dug three times before it despawns and another one becomes available. One really interesting thing about Archaeology is noone can ninja your digsite or find your loot. It's only visible to you.
When deciding where to dig next, check your map and head to the nearest location. Sometimes you'll get lucky and have 2 or 3 dig sites in the same zone. Each race also has a special keystone that you can find that will speed up solving the research project. Basically, it helps fill in some missing fragments but will not work while solving all your research projects; just some. I've listed some below. This usually takes anywhere from 25 up to depending on the value and complexity of the research project.
After you get all the fragments you need, click 'solve' and see what you get. You can get some awesome rewards like a nice mount - [Fossilized Raptor] , pet - [Fossilized Hatchling] , the possibility of containing the [Recipe: Vial of the Sands] in a [Canopic Jar] to make the Alchemy mount and other rewards that include Bind on Account items.
It's really a profession worth having. I strongly urge you not to solve any artifacts until you reach skill level 50 after patch 4. If you are one of the first to watch this video and it's still patch 4. At skill level 50 head to the Archaeology trainer and learn Journeyman Archaeology. From skill level 50 for patch 4. Each artifact solved will award five skill points. Solving artifacts usually takes anywhere from 25 up to fragments depending on the value and complexity of the research project.
You can get a trash gray or some awesome rewards like a nice mount - [Fossilized Raptor] , pet - [Fossilized Hatchling] , the possibility of containing the [Recipe: Vial of the Sands] in a [Canopic Jar] to make the Alchemy mount and other rewards that include Bind on Account items.
See below for a full reward list. After you reach skill level , head to the trainer and learn Expert Archaeology. The guide is in a small window on your main screen in-game. All the detail that you need to complete the quest is included. The guide is available for both Horde and Alliance. Dig sites look like this Survey You will also get a new ability called [Survey]. So how does this work in action? You go to a dig site, use your [Survey] ability, and then a little tripod will spawn with a red, yellow, or green light.
First, you check which direction it points to, and then you move that way. If it's red, you should mount up and run for a while and then use Survey again. When it's yellow, you shouldn't move that much, and if it's green, it's probably within 40 yards.
Just keep going in the direction the Survey tool points to. With practice, you will find most of the artifacts within Survey use. Survey Tool Fragments When you discover your find, you'll get fragments specific to a particular race. Profession Ranks The first rank of Archeology requires level 5, and it allows a maximum potential skill of 75, then each rank will increase your maximum potential Archeology skill. Zygor's Leveling Guide I recommend trying Zygor's Leveling Guide if you are still leveling your character or you just started a new alt.
Other people orienteer , simply heading off in the direction indicated until they strike paydirt. When you have picked up your artifact, be sure to Survey again in that exact spot. Sometimes the artifact will spawn again in the same place. This section concerns content exclusive to Legion. Starting in Legion, when a character is very close to an artifact, a glow with a shovel handle will appear above their head.
If they use the [Survey] ability, the lootable object should appear nearby. For each race in archaeology with the exception of Fossil keystones exist that can be randomly looted when searching for fragments.
Any fragments that go over the amount needed to complete the current artifact will carry over to the next puzzle. It is worth noting that keystones are not bind-on-pickup, and as such can be sold on the auction house or passed to other characters if you do not need them for your own archaeology. They can also be used at the entrance to Cataclysm dungeons to provide a buff to the entire party, though each dungeon requires a specific runestone for the buff to be activated and it is destroyed in the process.
When you get a new fragment, you'll start a research project. You can only work on one artifact per race at a time. When you have enough fragments, click Solve to complete that artifact. You won't waste excess fragments, they will just start the next project. Most artifacts are common. These give a bit of lore or flavor text and an item you can sell for a small profit. You'll still have the description in your journal regardless of what you do with the physical item, so it's ok to sell them.
You can estimate the value of the artifact by the number of fragments required to finish it. You will only be able to work on one artifact for a given race at a time.
Once one artifact for a given race is completed, the next one will appear in your journal and you cannot continue until you complete it.
Some artifacts are rare, requiring many more fragments to complete than common artifacts, and make a blue or purple item. Many of these are toys, or for flavor, but some are actual weapons and armor. Weapons and armor are bound to account , but will not scale like heirlooms do. Note for scripts: You must have opened your Completed Artifacts list in order for the script to work as of your current solve statuses If you want to see how many artifacts you have solved for the individual races, use the following script in a macro.
If you want to see how many artifacts you have solved in total, use the following script in a macro. Unlike most professions, proficiencies don't mean that much in that they generally only restrict investigating specific dig sites.
Illustrious Grand Master is only available after installing the expansion Cataclysm. Zen Master is only available after installing the expansion Mists of Pandaria. Draenor Master is only available after installing the expansion Warlords of Draenor. Legion Master is only available after installing the expansion Legion.
Archaeology has set skill levels at which players can solve artifacts from different cultures. Fragments collected before players reach the appropriate level are hidden from view until they have reached the appropriate level for that culture and have found more fragments from that culture , at which time the previously collected fragments for that culture are made available.
