Work-to-rule refers to the job action of teachers doing only what is described in the official work responsibilities. Non-essential work such as EQAO prep, report card comments, off-hour support, and extracurricular activities are no longer performed.
Students lose valuable after-school activities and valuable feedback regarding their performance at school. With the planned rotating and one-day strikes, parents have to scramble to make alternative arrangements for child care and keeping their children engaged during the day-offs.
Needless to say, parents and children are caught in the middle of a prolonged negotiation, and they are not thrilled about the disruptions and impacts to their daily work schedule.
The Ontario government is offering daycare reimbursements to parents who are affected by the strike actions, which some say that they should instead focus on negotiating and coming to an agreement.
In recent days, the Ontario government has indicated willingness to revert the class size increase and e-learning changes to OSSTF, thus showing some goodwill to restart negotiation. The unions vow to fight legislation capping the wage settlements for hundreds of thousands of teachers, nurses, professors, bureaucrats, and numerous other public service employees at one per cent annually for the next three years.
This is a move that would phase out thousands of teaching jobs and tens of thousands of course options for teens. The government would mandate two online courses for teens, not four. Such classes are optional now, and there is no jurisdiction in North America that has such a requirement.
Parents have to register online to receive compensation. No receipts are required for the payouts. Thursday, the government has received 33, applications for funding. The Association des enseignantes et des enseignants franco-ontariens AEFO , which represents French-language teachers in the province, announces its members voted 97 per cent in favour of strike action.
AEFO begins a work-to-rule campaign for its members. ETFO takes part in the first of several daily rotating strikes during the week of Jan. School boards in Toronto, York Region, and Ottawa are among the first affected. OECTA has a full withdrawal of services throughout the province leading to the closure of publicly-funded Catholic schools. ETFO members hold a provincewide walkout , with a second one planned for Feb. ETFO holds another provincewide walkout.
OECTA announces it has reached a tentative deal with the province and would suspend strike action.
