None of the Ghostbusters movies are particularly good, though you might argue the original was great, in the way that cult comedy classics from the s often take on a life of their own with people who grew up wearing out their VHS copies or rewatching them on TV whenever they aired.
Was there really enough life in Ghostbusters to sustain a whole new reboot? In the end, the movie was merely fine. But in retrospect, the Great Ghostbusters Apocalypse of spring was a harbinger of things to come, and a window into the ways the internet can fan the flames and provide a platform for the toxic corners of pop culture fandoms to act on their worst impulses.
In some ways, the Ghostbusters backlash was a sequel to Gamergate , which began with the bizarre and misogynistic harassment of a number of women in the gaming world, grew into a full-blown online troll onslaught, and eventually became a blueprint for recruiting mostly young men to the burgeoning alt-right. The Ghostbusters backlash was also perpetuated largely by a violently vocal minority and took some of the same shape as Gamergate, particularly in the ways it targeted women and people of color.
The harm also extended beyond attacks on specific people associated with the movies, by making it nearly impossible to have a conversation about Ghostbusters — or Captain Marvel or The Last Jedi or any other similarly targeted property — that was actually about the movies.
Instead of talking about the movies on their merits, we are left talking about the bad-faith attacks. The latter have become an increasingly big part of our cultural conversations this decade, in which Hollywood has seemingly only begun to wake up to how its risk-averse business models and outmoded ideas of what moviegoers want have affected the stories and voices it invests in. But those are conversations about inclusion , about making room for more people to bring their art to an audience, because a culture always benefits from a richer array of voices.
The attacks on Ghostbusters and subsequent films were fundamentally about exclusion — about keeping certain artists and voices out. It then takes the player to another mission at the New York Public Library, where a portal to the Ghost World is opened after capturing the Librarian Ghost.
A mysterious mandala is discovered to be drawing ghosts in, merging the Ghost World into the human one. Ghostbuster 3 went through many versions after Aykroyd's script: one by Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg , a passing of the torch story in which Venkman would have died in the first act and Dana's son Oscar would have become a Ghostbuster, and another by Etan Cohen, with Venkman also dying but becoming a ghost, and a group of Columbia students taking the Ghostbusters mantle.
Ivan Reitman was set to return as director of this version , but after Ramis' death in he decided to step down. Murray's reluctance to commit to a new Ghostbusters film was also a big obstacle during development, so it was decided instead that the franchise be rebooted — and so Feig's version happened. Although the cast and Feig had signed on for two sequels, the film's poor box office performance was enough for the studio to decide to not move forward with any sequels, instead choosing to make a direct sequel to Ghostbusters II with Jason Reitman on board as director and co-writer.
Ghostbusters: Afterlife will have the original cast back yes, Bill Murray too , but will mostly focus on Trevor and Phoebe's story and their connection with the original team, with many fans theorizing they could be Spengler's grandchildren. It's unknown if Ghostbusters: Afterlife reworked some elements from Aykroyd's Ghostbusters 3 or not, but it will hopefully give closure to the remaining members of the original team and will succeed in introducing a new one that can carry on with the legacy of Venkman, Stantz, Spengler, and Zeddemore.
Adrienne Tyler is a features writer for Screen Rant. You read that right, Manhellton—a place where the cops are blue Minotaurs for some reason, and the devil is Donald Trump. Only one of those aspects makes any sense at all, and we feel confident that even if Bill Murray would have agreed to do the movie, no studio would have greenlit the thing.
Seriously, Aykroyd, Manhellton? It's alright, Dr. Stantz, you're still our favorite Ghostbuster. Not to mention, he was one of the lead characters. When Ramis died in , a lot of the wind left the sails for that version of the project. Ivan Reitman, who helmed both Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II , stepped down from the director's chair, but agreed to stay on as a producer.
He and Ramis had both previously acknowledged that the movie would include the original characters in some capacity, but in more of a "baton passing" way to a new, younger cast. With Ramis' passing and Murray's non-commitment, the script would obviously need a major rewrite. Despite all of this, Sony quickly announced plans to move forward with the project, because once a studio knows they've generated significant social buzz, that's not something they let go of easily.
