Most Recent. Very good. During my frequent trips to Berlin without fail I visit two most interesting and emotional locations only some three kilometres apart. They are far more interesting than the standard tourist attractions but are unknown to many visitors who seek the numerous war locations of the city. Her Geburtshaus was in fact an apartment in Leberstrasse 65 Berlin-Schoneberg although at the time of her birth the address was Sedanstrasse Her birthname was Marie Magdelene Dietrich but her first names were amalgamated to Marlene and she was of course often called Lili Marlene. Her birth on Friday 27th December at 9. To arrive at The Birth House you should take the S Bahn city railway to Sudkreuz Bahnhof and then take a short walk or possibly a bus or From there you can also walk to Marlene's last resting place in the Stadtischer Friedhof III Friedenau although you could return to Sudkreuz Bahnhof and take the S Bahn three stops to Bundesplatz where there is a great teashop and patisserie close by and then take another short stroll via Sudwestkorso turning right into Stubenrauchstrasse and into the cemetery.
Marlene died on 6th May aged 90 in Paris and after a service at La Madeleine was returned on 16th May to the city she considered herself part of to rest close to her mother and to her Geburtshaus.
A real home coming. She rests in an oasis that demands total respect hushed voices and gentle footsteps. Trees and hedges protect her from the noise of Berlin and her surroundings are pleasantly maintained. The grave is in the north west section of the cemetery and is simple and totally understated.
The gravestone has the inscription 'Hier steh ich an den Marken meiner Tage - Here I stand at the milestone of my days' with the name 'Marlene - ' - no other words are necessary. The grave is always covered in flowers and messages so she is not lonely. You can purchase flowers at the cemetery entrance or at several local florists so please leave flowers for her with your name.
There is a wonderful local lady who tends her family grave close by and also keeps a watch over Marlene. You will feel privileged to have visited a most remarkable and atmospheric place and to have remembered someone known and respected throughout the world. You will always remember the occasion and will hopefully return. In her death and her simple grave she continues to receive the respect and adulation she enjoyed throughout her life.
I was privileged to meet her in Peaceful plot for one of the greatest female film icons of early cinema. A short walk from Friedrich-Wilhelm-Platz and the Ubah station there. This is a road that runs diagonally north-west from the top of Friedrich-Wilhelm-Platz.
Marlene's grave is in plot 32 which is located in the top north west section of the cemetery not plot 27 as some online listings state. Its not over the top as some might expect but quite a simple elegant grave. The inscription reads in German 'Here I stand at the marks of my days'.
